This software is designed for GNU/Linux with glibc 2.1 or later. NSS-MySQL should compile with gcc 2.72 and later (including gcc3*). A Solaris port has begun, but it should be considered as alpha. If you are upgrading from a previous version, ALWAYS read UPGRADE. Don't use it unless you can afford to lose access to your system and be forced to boot from floppy or into single user mode. Having said that, so long as you have a reasonable /etc/nsswitch.conf setup you should be fairly OK :-} (check the INSTALL file for more details) YOU SHOULD NOT USE NSCD with this version. If you're using a distribution which is starting MySQL with the --user switch, MySQL will not start. Because the client API does not react properly to a half-started server. To workaround that problem, su to the user and then start MySQL. Limitation: you cannot add non MySQL users to MySQL groups. This is why join for members is done on the group_id and NOT on the GID.
