The use of the ``=id'' mechanism is now only needed when writing an output file in a grid format other than the netCDF default or when reading using custom scaline and translation is required. We have also added a new user directory pointed to by <B>GMT_USERDIR</B> (default directory is <U><IMG WIDTH="17" HEIGHT="15" ALIGN="BOTTOM" BORDER="0" SRC="img16.png" ALT="$\sim$">/.gmt</U>) where items such as <U>.gmtdefaults4</U> will be looked for.
